How Hard Is Your Hustle?
Lifelong Greenwich Village resident Phil Mortillaro is no longer keeping his artwork under lock and key.
In October, the owner of Greenwich Locksmiths decorated his tiny store's facade with intricate patterns made from 10,000 keys.
"I wanted to leave something with New York," Mortillaro, 60, said. "There's no real art going on in the Village anymore. I thought this would be nice."
The project took two years of welding keys of all shapes, sizes and vintage onto panels. The undertaking was so big, Mortillaro had to buy keys from salvagers at $1.25 a pound. The result is a brass canvas of spiraling patterns inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's masterpiece "Starry Night."
